This portrait of the aristocratic rebel Lord Edward shows him with his short-cut ''democratic'' hairstyle and ''belcher'' neck-kerchief, a labouring fashion adopted by aspiring revolutionaries and - it has to be said - dandies. The rebellion of which he was one of the leaders in 1798 was unsuccessful, but it was undoubtedly one of the first major blows to English rule and a step on the road to the Irish independence which he craved.
