Henry Cavendish as Viscount Mansfield served as MP for Derbyshire and Northumberland until 1676 when he inherited the title of Duke of Newcastle on Tyne from his father, one of the late King Charles's most loyal supporters.
This portrait presumably dates from c. 1677 when the Duke was made a Knight of the Order of the Garter whose insignia the Duke wears prominently in this portrait.
