Devis’s wide-ranging career embraces various genres and styles, from landscape and formal portraiture to remarkable scenes of Indian peasant life. His portraits of children are among his most successful, in which he achieves a lively and timeless characterisation without condescending to his sitters, or imbuing them with precocious dignity. This portrait of two children playing, the girl focusing on her brother with the adoration of a younger for an older sibling whilst he fixes the viewer with a glance conveying a sense of incipient self-possession, and a proper consciousness of his position in the world, is a moving yet unsentimental vignette of aristocratic childhood.
