This work was painted during the same year that Grant took up his studio at 21 Fitzroy Square, at a time when he increasingly focused his efforts on portraiture. Having recently studied the Old Masters in Paris, Grant developed a comprehensive understanding of human anatomy, evident in this bold nude. Within the safety of his studio, Grant could explore the form of the male nude; he primarily painted portraits of friends and family members, though he did hire models on occasion.
