This peaceful depiction of the rolling Suffolk countryside was painted by Cedric Morris in the early 1940s during the Second World War.

Following a fire at their old premises in Dedham, the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing was relocated to Cedric and Lett’s new home, Benton End, on the outskirts of Hadleigh. The EASPD was open to students throughout the war and in between teaching his pupils and tending to his garden, Morris would slip out into the surrounding countryside to paint. The still-life and landscape works Morris painted during the 1940s are generally less textured and display a greater concern with the subtle blending of colour. In the present work, for example, different variations of the colour green softly fade into one another with none of the sharp juxtapositions one sometimes sees in Morris’ earlier landscape paintings from the late 1920s and early 1930s.
