Michael Noakes was one of the few artists commissioned to paint Margaret Thatcher during her time in office as Prime Minister. The commission came through in 1989, and he started sittings in January 1990, her last year in office.
This portrait was the first fully considered painted study and was completed in the early part of 1990. It was received enthusiastically by both Denis and Margaret Thatcher.
