This small portrait of a child -indistinguishably a girl or a boy from the custom of dressing children alike until breaching- belongs to the most successful period of Linnell's portraiture. It is not, however, a grand, Laurentian image, but a precursor of the informal images of childhood that would become increasingly popular as the century drew on, both in portraits and in genre.
