The present work was painted relatively early in Smart’s career and is one of only a small number of examples by him painting an older subject. The confident handling of a variety of textures in the clothing – from the intricate lace shawl, to the bonnet tied under the sitter’s chin – is indicative of the technical aptitude for painting fabric that he maintained throughout his career.
