Jeanne-Philibert Ledoux was born in Paris to the architect Claude Nicolas Ledoux. Father and daughter were immortalized in a painting by Antoine-Francois Callet (now in the Musee Carnavalet, Paris) when she was about five years old.
Ledoux studied under Jean-Baptiste Greuze and was said to have been one of his favourite pupils. Her works in pastel and oil are frequently confused with those of her master. As a contemporary of Louise Elizabeth Vigee Le Brun, she is less well-known although almost equally prolific.
The miniatures of Ledoux are held in several museum collections, including the Bowes Museum in England and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in America. Her probable self portrait (in oil) is in the Museum of Decorative Arts, Paris and her master also painted her (Greuze, North Carolina, Semans Collection). A portrait previously thought to represent her, by the Swedish miniaturist Pierre Adolphe Hall (Wallace Collection, London) is now thought to represent an unknown lady.
As might be expected of a pupil of Greuze, Ledoux’s subject matter was most successful when focused on women and children, as seen in this delicate portrait of three children, possibly siblings, dated to the height of her career. She participated in the Paris Salons between 1793-1819, exhibiting miniatures as well as oil portraits.
