Anne Ferdinand de Berthier was the son of Joseph François Foulon, Baron de Doué (1715-1789), the controller general of finance. Made a Chevalier of Malta in 1786, he also held the important position of maitre de requêtes. a colonel and Conseiller d’Etat. His first marriage was in 1809 to Amelie de Bachi de Saint-Esteve (b.1788) and his second to Marie Louise de Reincourt. A book written in Paris in 1948 presumably by his descendent, G. Bertier Sauvigny, is titled; Count Ferdinand de Bertier (1782-1864) and the enigma of the Congregation.
De Berthier had three sons, Ferdinand (1813-1893), Charles (1817-1905) and Alphonse (1830-1894).
