Constantijn Netscher was one of twelve children of the acclaimed Court painter Caspar (1639-84), although he and his brother Theodoor were alone in following their father's profession. As this painting -most probably the work described by Hofstede de Groot in 1913 as ''masterly in treatment''- demonstrates, Constantijn specialised like his father in small-scale three-quarter length portraits, which combine the poses and the impact of portraiture on the scale of life with a delicacy and close observation that larger, broader works might lack.

These twin aspects are apparent in the present work, where the composition is that expected of a battle portrait of a general, but the treatment of costume, drapery and armour also expresses an interest and an expertise in the native still-life tradition.
