The radical Liberal politician Joseph Chamberlain was one of the more colourful figures of late nineteenth century politics. He is remembered in Birmingham as a much-loved and philanthropic mayor, and on progressing. He was invited by Gladstone to be President of the Board of Trade in 1880 and in 1895 in an alliance with the Conservatives was appointed Colonial Secretary by the Prime Minister Lord Salisbury. Joseph Chamberlain was father to Austen Chamberlain and to the Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain.
