This penetrating portrait by Marshall shows that as well as being a renowned sporting painter - and a former pupil of George Stubbs - he was capable of remarkable psychological acuity in portraiture, in which genre he studied under Lemuel Francis Abbott, and as portraits such as this demonstrate, easily exceeded his master.
