Fred Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague, writing on behalf of Rudolf Ekkart, the director, states in a letter dated April 17, 1997:
"The portrait...was recognized as a Jan Jansz. Westerbaen...It can be dated to c. 1650. There seems to be some confusion as to which Jan Jansz. Westerbaen, father or son, painted which part of the oeuvre; a problem which is not easy to solve, as they worked during the same period and may well have collaborated. In any case, your portrait can be counted among the best quality Westerbaens and would seem to belong to the group of works generally given to Westerbaen the Elder.''
