The effect of Van Loo's arrival in London on British portraiture in the late 1730s was dynamic - the Continental refinement and polish that marked his work made so much then-fashionable painting appear dowdy and outmoded, especially perhaps in the portrayal of women in which - as here - he was able to suggest wit and an inner mental life far more ably than his rivals.
