This is almost certainly the portrait of Lord Roberts of Kandahar'' that Furse exhibited at the Royal Academy of 1894 as no. 838 from 33 Tite Street, Chelsea. The artist trained at the Slade under professor Legros and afterwards at Académie Julian in Paris. On his return to London he concentrated on portraiture and quickly established himself as a regular exhibitor at both the Royal Academy (of which he was elected an associate member) and the New English Art Club.

It is likely that the artist met the Field-Marshal through his brother Lt.-General Sir William Furse who had been A.D.C to Lord Roberts in South Africa during the Boer War. Furse made a number of portrait studies, including the famous likeness of Roberts on his charger ''Colonel''. A sketch for this particular work is owned by the Tate Gallery (no.615) and another passed by descent to Lt. Gen. Sir Euan Miller.
