Harvard Thomas was born in Bristol where he studied before winning a scholarship to the RCA, followed by a period studying at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He first exhibited at the RA in 1872. He began teaching at the Slade in 1911 and was made Professor of Sculpture in 1915.
He exhibited a bust of Manning at the RA in 1876 and from 1876 -1886 he worked on images of Manning, producing a group of work including this example as well as the bronze bust which is now in the Tate, and the marble bust in the Archbishop's House, Westminster Cathedral.
