This youthful image of prince Charles Edward Stuart shows him in a grey coat with froggjng, and identified as to rank and status by the Star and riband of the Order of the Garter, and by an ermine mantel that is draped across him. The likeness is comparatively youthful, and the face resembles a pastel portrait by Rosalba Camera (Dr J. B. Hatmann Collection, Rome) executed in 1737. At this date the Prince sat predominantly to French painters, although the portraits by the Italian Domenico Dupra that show the Prince in military guise produced in the period immediately leading up to 1745 employ a very closely comparable face mask, and it seems probable that it was to the Dupra portrait that the painter of the present painting looked for his inpiration. The size of the present canvas — the standard half-yard of thirty by twenty-five inches - suggests that it may well have been painted by a British artist, and intended to display by a Jacobite patron in England or Scotland.
