Lord Brouncker was one of the founder members of the Royal Society, and served as its first President. This portrait is a studio version of Lely's original in the collection of the Society, in which the sitter alludes to his mathematical prowess. With John Wallis in 1658 he discovered a solution to Fermat's theorem.
