The elegant restraint of this portrait characterises Wright's earliest work, heavily influenced by the prevailing London manner of painters such as Thomas Hudson, with whom Wright studied for two years from 1751 to 1753. Even in early works such as this, however, the sense of light, and the chiaroscuro with which the face is modelled stand above the run of his contemporaries and prefigure the style of his future masterpieces.
