Lord Grey of Fallodon was prominent in the attempts to prevent the incipient conflagration in the Balkans from spreading to the rest of Europe. It is not known when in 1914 this portrait was painted, and whether it depicts the sitter before or after the frantic days in August when he was racing to defuse the crisis, but its imminence to those fatal events gives it an especial power.
