The Bristol-born painter Paul Falconer Poole was largely self-taught, and soon came to the attention of contemporaries when he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1832 at the age of twenty-five his painting The Well, inspired by his travels in Italy. He painted and exhibited for the rest of his life, becoming RA in 1864. Many of his paintings are inspired by the medieval romance of Italy and illustrate literary subjects such as Boccaccio's Decameron.
