The remarkable career of the Swedish singer Jenny Lind led her after an initial singing tour of England to be recruited by the great impresario PT Barnum, and taken round America in the early 1850s to perform in front of sell-out crowds. As philanthropic as she was talented Lind accepted what she recognised was a sensationalist and garish invitation with the intention of donating a large share of her takings to fund education for the poor in her native Sweden. Though she did not return to Sweden but to England from America she was as good as her intentions and bequeathed a large amount to fund the education of the poor in her homeland.
