Mercier's elegant Rococo style is well-suited to this portrait of a young woman in a landscape. Mercier was one of a number of foreign-born artists who helped to introduce the light and airy manner of the rococo into this country, assisted by the patronage of Frederick Prince of Wales, the most enthusiastic Royal patron and collector since King Charles I, who had grown up in Europe.
