Pitt is here depicted in the uniform of the St James's Loyal Volunteer Regiment in a painting of 1803, of which a version exists in the National Portrait Gallery London. Pitt was appointed Governor General of India in 1823 and for his conduct of a defensive war with Burma in the following year was created an Earl.
