This work is a study for the first painted portrait of Major as Prime Minister, which shows him full length in the study of his house at Great Stukely in Cambridgeshire, reading a volume of his favourite author, Anthony Trollope. The finished portrait went on view at the National Portrait Gallery in London, and was intended to hang in the Conservative Party Central Office in Smith Square. The portrait was in fact such a success with the Prime Minister that a second was commissioned for Smith Square, and the first hangs in his private residence in Huntingdon.
