This remarkable capriccio of a sea port shows the breadth and vision typical of landscape paintings by the Valckenborch family and their circle. In the foreground an elegant company mingle with fishermen and traders, whilst beyond galleys and a sea gateway to an imaginary city conjure a fantastic vision comparable with the later paintings of Claude Lorrain.
