The wily minister who held the reins of French government until his death in 1661 was a statesman and diplomat of incomparable ability. He weathered the jealousy of the nobles whom he excluded from Government to steer France through the minority of Louis XIV and two uprisings, the Frondes, to bequeath the country intact to the King on his deathbed, by which age the King was able to take over his inheritance.
