This beautiful small portrait shows the sitter in the regalia of the Lord Mayor of London to which John Barnard was elected in 1738. As well as being Lord Mayor, Barnard was all recognised as an authority on financial questions. A version of the same composition was painted by Allan Ramsay, and this painting may be an interesting and important example of Hogarth repeating another painter's work for his own purpose.
