This pugnacious profile is preliminary to Cooper's most famous portrait of the Prime Minister, the Profile for Victory. In this painting he has managed to distil the particular qualities which informed Churchill's character during the Second World War- the indomitable tenacity which proved such an inspiration to the public. Appropriately, the Profile was reproduced after the exhibition at the RA in 1943 as a successful propaganda poster.
