The precise role of this small full-length portrait is unclear. However, since it remained in the artist's studio until his death it may well have been used as a point of reference.

Shee's first portrait of Munro dates from between his return home in June 1819, and his re-embarkation for India in December. In August he had been promoted to Major-General, appointed Governor of Madras and awarded KCB. Shee painted a pair of half-length images of Munro and his wife (NPG 3124 & 3124a) which were exhibited at the Royal Academy the following year. -1

He later adapted this into a full-length portrait for Madras Town Hall which depicts the sitter with sword, map of India and a despatch box. This portrait, executed in 1828 was also exhibited at the RA, in 1829.
