An inscription on the reverse of the frame which reads ‘John Stewart’, may allude to the identity of the sitter in this work. Daphne Foskett lists two portraits of a ‘Mr Stewart’ painted the year before the present work in 1777, although given that the whereabouts of the two portraits is unknown, a comparison of likeness with this work has not been possible.

In this example we see Smart’s capability at handling different textures of clothing, seen especially in the shimmering highlights on the gold edging around the sitter’s waistcoat.
