This small panel portrait shows Bishop John Fisher, amongst the earliest Catholics to be martyred by Henry VIII. Executed at the same time as Thomas More, Fisher is venerated as the first establishment opponent of Henry’s Reformation to be condemned to death. This likeness is one of very few early relics of Fisher, and is based on a drawing by Hans Holbein the Younger.
