Very little is known about the artist Gallaway and in fact this portrait miniature dates from the first evidence of his practice – an advertisement in the Glasgow Courier in the summer of 1794. Although he was clearly an excellent miniaturist, his works are relatively scarce. His sitters varied greatly – from the emerging Scottish middle classes to personalities such as the actor Richard Brinsley Sheridan. Other examples of his work can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
