It is one of the ironies of the Civil War that Philip Herbert Earl of Pembroke, who as the King's Lord High Chamberlain, a Knight of the Garter whose insignia he wears and Van Dyck's most prolific private patron in England might seem to embody the qualities that bound men to the Royalist cause when in fact he was a supporter of Parliament in the conflict.
