George Monck's remarkable military career stretched from early service in the Netherlands with the Prince of Orange against the Spanish in the 1620s to war against the Scots in 1640 and then against the Irish Confederates in the early 1640s whilst the Civil War was raging on the mainland. At the conclusion of the First Civil War Monck remained a soldier and swore an oath of loyalty to Parliament, which he served ably in Ireland and Scotland. He distanced himself from Republicanism after the death of Cromwell, however, seeing Parliamentary rule as a desirable alternative to military dictatorship. He had already entered into secret negotiations with the King when elections returned an overwhelmingly Royalist Parliament, and when the King landed again at Dover General Monck was the first to greet him. For his service he was made a Knight of the Garter and then Duke of Albermarle.
